The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) conducted a comprehensive study to evaluate the impact of Nanobubble Oxygen (NB-O2) Technology on fish welfare, water quality, and overall growth performance in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Objectives

Methodology

Study Groups:
  • Two groups: Control (air treatment) and NB-O2 treatment.
  • Each group had 3 replicates, with 30 fish per tank.
  • NB-O2 was applied for 10 minutes, twice daily, for 3 months.
Fish Details:
  • Nile Tilapia fingerlings (avg. 6.98 ± 0.04 g) sourced from RGCA hatchery, Kochi.
  • Fish were acclimated for 2 weeks.
  • Fed 28% protein diet, twice daily at 2% of body weight.
  • Health screening was done before the experiment to exclude infected fish.
Data Collection:
  • Growth (weight & length) was measured weekly on 10 randomly selected fish per tank.
  • One fish from each group was sacrificed monthly for blood sampling.
  • Remaining fish returned to tanks after handling.
Lab Analysis:
  • Haematology via BC-30 Vet (Mindray).
  • Serum metabolites & enzymes via Dri-Chem Nx500V.
  • Oxidative stress markers tested with Origin kits.
  • Cortisol measured using ELISA (Cusabio, USA).
