TILAPIA FISH (Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) )

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) conducted a comprehensive study to evaluate the impact of Nanobubble Oxygen (NB-O2) Technology on fish welfare, water quality, and overall growth performance in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Objectives

To study the effect of ozone Nanobubbles on pathogenic bacterial load in water.

Methodology

The experiment tested two fish-rearing systems:
  • Nanobubble Ozone Treatment Group
  • Control Group (No nanobubble treatment)
Water Treatment Process:
  • Every 24 hours, 50% of the water in the tanks was replaced.
  • Out of this 50%:
    • 40% was regular UV-treated water.
    • 10% was enriched with ozone nanobubbles (O3 NB).
  • This continued until the water’s ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) stabilized at 650 ± 150 mV.
  • After each treatment, ORP briefly dropped to around 330 mV within 15 minutes, which is normal.
For the Control Group:
  • Also had 50% daily water exchange.
  • Only UV-treated water was used (no nanobubbles).
  • ORP was maintained at a lower level of 250 ± 100 mV
Disease Challenge Test:
  • Two harmful bacteria were used:
    • Aeromonas hydrophila
    • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • A lethal dose of each bacterium was added to the tanks.
  • Fish were exposed for 1 hour under normal aeration.
  • After the exposure:
    • Fish were kept under normal aeration for 24 hours.
    • Then, the water exchange process (with or without nanobubbles) was resumed as described above.

The bacterial load in water has displayed a significant reduction following the NBO3 treatment. The results are promising that the treatment standardised at ORP of 650±150 mV every 24 hours is sufficient to reduce the bacterial load in the rearing water without causing damage to the gills of the fishes. The ORP values above 800mV have shown significant adaptive change in the gills of the fishes.

Conclusion

NICO's NB-O2 tech significantly enhances aquaculture productivity, fish health, and sustainability. It represents a transformative, scalable solution for modern fish farming.
